Hank Mobley - A Slice Of The Top (Blue Note Tone Poet Series) (180 Gram) (LP)
Recorded in 1966 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, A Slice of the Top finds tenor saxophone giant Hank Mobley drawing inspiration from Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool to craft something uniquely his own. Working with arranger Duke Pearson, Mobley assembled an exceptional octet featuring jazz luminaries Lee Morgan on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, and the distinctive voices of euphonium and tuba woven throughout the arrangements β giving the session a warm, rich tonal depth rarely heard in hard bop of the era.
This Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition, produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray directly from the original analog master tapes, presents Mobley's lyrical playing in stunning fidelity, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. Standout moments like "Hank's Other Bag," "A Touch of Blue," and the title track "A Slice of the Top" showcase Mobley's gift for melody alongside some of the most distinctive ensemble voicings of his career, making this an essential addition for fans of Blue Note's golden era.
